I think it is about time that my treasured second son, Ben features here. He certainly features in much of my photography and I feel truly blessed to have such photogenic children. I'm sure every mum feels the same though.

“If I be waspish, best beware my sting.” ― William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew I haven't been stung by one yet that I know about, plenty of bees but no wasps yet. I'm sure my time will come but as I sat on the bank of the inner harbour estuary on Sunday, a particularly delightfully foggy/misty/rainy day, I couldn't help but be drawn to these little guys. When I glanced up at the kayaker and the paddle boarder, I knew what they were doing, but the wasps? I didn't know whether they were hunting or looking for nest sites or just paying a visit to the flax bushes that flank the waters edge. So here is a shot of their activity. They certainly weren't collecting pollen as they are not known to be pollinators. What was their devious business that day, and why should I care? Well.. Tomorrow is full moon. It rises over our beach and is a fantastic thing to watch if the timing is right. My plan was to wait until tomorrow and then go and "shoot the moon". That was until I looked outside my front door this evening. A casual glance just to see what the blustery conditions had blown up weather wise. Today really has been annoyingly windy with dust getting into everything. I was greeted with this view. In fact this is my very fist shot I managed to fire off once I had set up the tripod and dialled in my settings. Yes, truly those colours actually were there in the clouds. I have been trying to work out... As the fireworks start early, they tell us that 2013 just about done! It's always a good thing to look back and reflect on what the year has meant. Personally, I like to be able to pinpoint growth areas in my life. Hopefully not too much growth in the girth areas, but at least forward motion in wisdom, spiritual and emotional areas. For me... The need to escape and be alone. The desire to feel at one with nature and commune with Our Father and not have another soul in sight. Or perhaps to sleep for two weeks straight! Who can relate? Not many perhaps, but often this is me. "Peopled out" is the term bandied around for those times when introverted folks, and I presume some seriously stretched extroverted folks just need to have some time out. I love the way Mierav puts it on her.. What is it about the beach that sooths the soul? In fact it may be simply being near water. I think of gardens with elaborate fountains, or even a simple goldfish pond. One of the joys of photography is being able to showcase such places. Eugene Tan from Aquabumps www.aquabumps.com makes his living (indirectly) from visiting the beach and documenting the sunrise and goings on each day. Not a bad life and not a bad following with 40,000 odd daily email subscribers. I am one and I just don't seem to tire of his stunning photography. I also can't believe how packed out Bondi beach in Australia, is at am in the morning and it's not even summer yet! Waihi Beach is One of my favourite things to do is to create an image from a concept or idea. Combining the raw materials to produce a piece of artwork. Photography is the most powerful tool at my disposal and I do love to create from it to take the image further. It feels like the painting process only faster and easier to undo undesirable outcomes. To start with a blank canvas and a head full of ideas is wonderful. Once that first stroke is made... I had my first swim for the season on the 5th of October. The water is still cold 15 degrees C, but it was a refreshing dip and the air temp is lovely, around 23 degrees. Images in Monochrome: Can one effectively present a sunset or water like this one, in a monochromatic rendition? Understanding of course that Monochrome by definition is one colour but can contain many shades. This is different to a grayscale image or a |
AuthorI am a visual person. I find that surrounding myself in creation, feasting my eyes on what is before me and daydreaming a little is great refreshment for my soul. I also read avidly about trends, techniques and technicalities associated with visual art. When I can, I love assigning large chunks of time responding to what I see and crafting my own art. Here is a place to put that down. Archives
